What Feng Shui Means To Me - A Feng Shui Practitioner’s Story

I believe Feng Shui holds the key to a very strong source of power for us - our homes. This is why I became a Certified Feng Shui Professional.

I fell in love with Feng Shui twenty years ago through a single conversation about how our spaces hold onto outdated versions of ourselves. Since then it has profoundly inspired me through many seasons in my personal life, as well as my amazing clients and my work with them. Here is what I have come to believe about Feng Shui, your home, and your own power.

How I Found Feng Shui

In my early 20’s I was studying meditation with a lovely community. Our focus was on being present as our essential selves - using an energetic practice of grounding and centering to support embodying ourselves in the present moment. Getting quiet. Staying centred. As my teacher would say: being well with what is. The emphasis was on how our true power exists in the present moment; it cannot be reached in the past or future.

One of my peers was a Feng Shui consultant, and in such a succinct and elegant way, he articulated that our environment can be one of the strongest contributors to this dynamic. If we leave a framed photograph of an outdated self-image, or personal effects that trigger an unhappy memory, these can work against - wear away at - our Presence. I saw this with such clarity. And then I saw it everywhere. How we can serve and support ourselves with the messages in our spaces, both physical and digital. I felt powerful, free, and playful using this knowledge. And have since then always seen value in taking the time to declutter and be intentional in my spaces.

That is where I fell in love with Feng Shui, around 20 years ago. And since then, it has revealed so many more dimensions to me.

Feng Shui - In A More Personal Way

I have also come to Feng Shui from a place of deep depletion. To support myself, I had been chasing quiet, ease, rest, dim, faux fur, cats, tea pots - in retrospect I can see now it was all Yin I cultivated as I searched for deep rest. It was when I added Yang that Yin was finally able to do her job. Adding back, intentionally, a bit of ignition, light, action, movement. I found so clearly, one truly does not take without the other.

This is the genius of Feng Shui - you can intentionally apply the dynamics of nature! Feng Shui taught me about balance in a very, very practical way. Conceptual Feng Shui? Delightful. But when the tires hit the pavement - oh gosh, gimme another word for practical! Moving objects, finding flow, bringing your environment into alignment. Cultivating healthy spaces that influence our day from waking onwards. 👣

What It Looks Like to Do This Work

Moving into professional practice and supporting others in their goals and dreams blasted open a whole new dimension again! Witnessing the creativity, incredible power, ingenuity, colours and wonder of others - and making suggestions on how to have that manifest in a home - it is absolutely wonderful in the truest sense of the word.

I don’t feel the closure, however, like when I complete my own projects. I am aware I have shared the lineage of powerful processes that have shone true over millennia; it doesn’t belong to me, but now its power is available to someone new. ✨

What I Actually Believe

Through these revelations, I have come to see how powerful we are to find solutions and create lives that serve us in such deep ways - solutions that serve our creativity, our interest, our life force. I have found a reliable prescription for anything that feels stuck. A way to come into alignment with the forces of nature.

Feng Shui is not really concerned with the exact colour of your front door or bedroom wall. Feng Shui is concerned with you thriving in your home.

I believe that being connected to this power is the battery that gets you where you are going. I believe most people are just a few minor adjustments away from uncovering a source of practical support that will surprise and delight them (hint: it’s your environment). And I believe you will have some fun in the journey.

Why I’m Like a Golfer

I am not here to say I am perfect in my own life (says the Virgo 🙄). I love to unbalance myself with working too hard, or thinking too much, or not practicing clarity. And that is why I am like a golfer and her golf game - a “Lifer” - here to improve every round, every swing, every fresh day out on the green. There are infinite applications of this.

Loving Feng Shui feels like deep curiosity, and greater possibility. It feels like awe and reverence for nature - for the powerful processes and dynamics that are infinitely creative, and yet with broad strokes still bring the predictability of seasons and solstices and meteor showers. Loving Feng Shui is allowing yourself to be surprised with creativity, and being comforted by the truth that there will always be a creative answer to an area of stuckness. Creativity: unpredictable, but also predictable.

Feng Shui is very real. It is very practical. It is very grounded, present. It is applied solutions. It is expansive life force.

It isn’t a checkbox. It is a feeling. It is nature moving and growing and expanding. It’s life bursting forth. Not wilderness, but wild. Movement within guide-rails. Out of cupboards comes nourishment. Out of bathrooms burst nourishing routines. Out of living rooms comes great connection, common ground, memories that sustain relationships. The patio is strictly delegated for relaxation- it is known!

There is always a solution, centred around ancient natural rhythms and seasons. It is about engaging with our space in a proactive, empowering way - Yang - and also a way of least resistance, which requires that Yin posture: allowance, acceptance, quiet, dark, inside. And suddenly, you feel less stuck.

A Testimonial

The feedback from my clients is SO SO SO SO important to me. And here is one that really made me sing and practically illustrates what I have been aiming to describe:

Jessie coaxed from the recesses of my imagination a vision for my studio that I didn’t know I had. What had once been nothing but a junk room became a beautiful artist’s studio that is my sanctuary, my meditation room, the place where I spend much of my time painting, relaxing, and enjoying my quiet time.

Thank you Jessie for your amazing gift of helping me realize what I am capable of.
